Glawe: More emphasis on soft locational factors when attracting investors – the Industry Conference is the best advertisement for our State
No.156/18 | 25.05.2018 | WM | Ministry of Economics, Employment and Health
At the National Healthcare Industry Conference in Rostock-Warnemünde, Economics Minister Harry Glawe named the Chairman of the Swiss Ypsomed Group, Simon Michel, as a new Economic Ambassador. "The company has grown over the years. Another location in Schwerin with growing production capacities is now to be expanded. Innovative Ypsomed products will now be developed in our Federal State. The new site will initially create 119 jobs", stated the Minister for Economics, Employment and Health Harry Glawe at the new location. This year, Switzerland is the partner country of the Industry Conference. The site in the Schwerin Industrial Park will produce components for pens, auto-injectors and pumping systems. Production will start in the first half of 2019. The headquarters of Ypsomed AG is in Burgdorf, Switzerland.
Stronger marketing for the business location – More emphasis on soft locational factors
Glawe thanked Simon Michel for his commitment to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. "You have gained a lot of valuable entrepreneurial experience that you can convincingly report on. The important point is that together we advertise even more strongly for the business location of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Economic Ambassadors are precisely the right address for this purpose", claimed Glawe. He made it clear that it was also necessary to emphasise the soft locational factors even more strongly. "What matters are not only a well developed infrastructure but also child daycare centres and schools. An attractive living environment and leisure opportunities are also important. Investors here also need motivated employees, who feel comfortable here in the 'State to live and work in'", Glawe continued.
Switzerland is the partner country of the Industry Conference – 1,500 jobs created by Swiss companies setting up locations here
For Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, other German-speaking countries are also of particular interest. “With Switzerland as the partner country at the Industry Conference, we have a country with which we enjoy a particularly close economic relationship. Over 1,500 jobs have been created here as a result of Swiss projects and locations", according to Glawe. More than 250 employees work at the Warnemünde location alone, engaged in the development and production of stents. The Cortronik company are working in collaboration with the leading worldwide Swiss medical technology company Biotronik.
Conclusion of the National Healthcare Industry Conference
Economics Minister Glawe drew a positive balance at the end of the two-day 14th National Healthcare Industry Conference. "The Conference is a model for success and the best advertisement for our State. We have presented ourselves as an outstanding host in front of an international audience. The Conference has provided inspiration extending far beyond the borders of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The health care sector is displaying excellent development. Altogether, this sector features more growth, more added value and more employment. The health care sector is a diverse market of opportunities. Our own economy must take stronger advantage of this market of the future", stated Glawe. "Every fifth employed person (20 percent) works in this sector – Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is therefore the front-runner in Germany. In no other Federal State in Germany is there such a high percentage of employment."
The gross value creation in the health care sector in M-V has grown at an annual rate of 5.2 percent in the past 10 years. The growth in this sector was therefore 2.8 percentage points higher than in the economy overall. There are now approx. 150,000 people working in the health care sector in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The number of employed in Germany rose on average by an annual 2.1 percent. These figures were compiled by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs within the framework of the total account in the healthcare sector in 2018.
Some 700 healthcare experts from industry, science and politics took part in the two-day event in Rostock-Warnemünde. This included guests from Germany, Switzerland, Finland, South Korea, Denmark and Estonia. The overall organisation for the 14th Industry Conference was undertaken by the BioCon Valley GmbH company (initiative for life science and the health economy in M-V).
Economic Ambassadors for MV
Over 60 personalities engage with the newly named Ambassador in the "Economic Ambassadors for MV" initiative set up in 2009. The initiative is primarily aimed at personalities from the field of economics, who act out of conviction to promote the region. The goal of this economic network is to develop more business locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern by means of personal contacts to decision-makers in the national and international economy, thereby contributing to the long-term health of the local economy. As an example, the relocation discussions with Nestlé were also accompanied by Economic Ambassadors.
