Logistics and Ports in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

The metropolitan region of Hamburg: Hub between East and West

As the gate to the Baltic north and Scandinavia, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offers important trans-European transportation routes with capacity potentials for the logistics sector. Some 1,500 companies in MV are engaged in transportation/logistics. As the interface between national and international transport chains, the state is an integral component of international transport networks thanks to its excellent land and sea transport connections – particularly along the north-south axis.

Economic centres, such as Berlin, Hamburg and Stettin, can be reached in the shortest time via well developed motorways. The modern commercial airport at Rostock-Laage is available for fast and effective freight transport. It is one of the few airports with night flight clearance. Cross-border transportation in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is also readily possible along the 1,700-kilometre rail network. The close-knit and effective network of railway links distinguishes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as an attractive industrial and logistics location.

The nodal points in the mobility network in the Baltic region

The ports and the port industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have a long tradition while remaining on growth course. According to a study published by the Ministry for Energy, Infrastructure and Regional Development, the volume of goods transported in the four ports of Rostock, Sassnitz/Mukran, Stralsund and Wismar alone is expected to more than double from the current 30 million tonnes to over 73 million tonnes by 2025. The main ports have been geared for growth on a trimodal basis. Thanks to its heavy-load quay and offshore terminal, the port of Sassnitz is ideally suited to the loading of wind turbines, while also accommodating the transhipment of Russia's wide-gauge transport. There are plans to deepen the port entrances in Rostock and Wismar, with the intention of making these locations even more efficient. Smaller and more compact port facilities such as those in Lubmin and Wolgast are also efficient, modern and flexible. In recent years, these ports have primarily focused on local goods volumes as well as specialising in niche markets. The distribution of efficient ports along the extensive coastline allows large-scale accessibility to the hinterland as well as integration into the diverse short-sea-shipping activities. Overall, the ports represent a solid basis for the maritime logistics industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
