Food Industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

With a total of 17,000 employees and an annual turnover of around 4.3 billion euros, the food industry is one of the most important branches of industry in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It covers all areas from primary production to agriculture and fishing, the processing of agricultural products and higher levels of processing, food marketing by retailers and the restaurant trade. A large quantity of raw materials which are imported via adjacent ports are processed in addition to those produced locally.

Food industry entrepreneurs have invested in their businesses and set up modern plants which have established themselves successfully in the German market. Globally active companies such as Nestlé, Unilever, Dr. Oetker and Cargill produce quality products “Made in M-V” with the most modern technology.

Conservation of resources and sustainability

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern leads nationally in the area of ecological agriculture. Around 20 percent of organic eggs, 10 percent of German organic pork and 15 percent of organic beef are produced here. A total of 135,827 ha or 10.1 percent of all arable land is farmed organically– a superlative figure compared to the national average of 7.5 percent. The region also attaches great importance to sustainability in the area of fishery. Since fish consumption is rising but fish stocks cannot be increased arbitrarily, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is turning increasingly to aqua-culture in addition to modern, resource-conserving coastal and freshwater fishing.
